Daycare:

We are proud to be members of the ABKA or American Boarding Kennel Association. We subscribe to their Bill of Rights and the standards they set forth for both their Daycare and Boarding programs.

At Puppy Playland we strive to meet your pets’ daycare needs and treat them like family with a staff that has experience in working with all types of dogs. Our staff is experienced with all types of personalities and pack behaviors that you will find in a daycare situation. Daycare is available to all dogs three months of age or older provided they have completed their initial puppy vaccinations which include DHPP, and Bortadella. All dogs must provide proof of current vaccinations including rabies yearly, and have been in good health for 30 days prior to attending daycare. We ask that all dogs come to an “Interview” so that we can assess how they will respond to a group situation. We do this for your peace of mind as well as ours so that you know that your best friend will be in a safe, fun, and loving environment while you are away.

We interview dogs on an individual basis, including mixed breed and rescue dogs. We do require that your dog live with you for at least 30 days prior to coming to daycare unless they are under 6 months of age. A new home can be a stressful situation sometimes for your new dog, and we want them to be comfortable in their new home so the daycare environment won’t stress them. Please call if you have questions regarding these policies.

We seek to maintain a ratio of one person for every 10 to 15 dogs so that we can be sure your pet gets the attention they need and deserve. We have ¾” rubber matting installed in our entire play area for better traction and to reduce stress injuries for your pets safety. We use a hospital grade disinfectant for cleaning and add air purification in order to maintain as healthy an environment as possible for your loved one.

We will exercise, play and socialize your dog in a loving environment. In addition to group play, every dog will receive individual attention throughout the day. Every day is different for our friends. Some days everyone has the energy to run all day. At other times they are tired from a day or week of fun. We have rest periods throughout the day to make sure your dog does not get over tired. These vary, but we promise to try to send everyone home tired and happy. We provide a stimulating place for everyone by giving dogs what they want most at any one time. Sometimes this is non-stop ball throwing, sometimes it means non-stop attention. We use our various types of agility equipment designed to build confidence in your dog such as the Dog Walk, A Frame, and Tunnel to give them a variety of activities.

If you feel your best friend could use a refresher on their manners, or you need help with training we invite you to use the resources of our staff trainer Sandy Cortello. Sandy has 20 years experience and uses “gentle touch” methods to help you train your dog. She loves to help those “problem children”.

Sandy is available for private lessons, training while your dog is in daycare, or while your dog is being boarded. Sandy would be happy to answer any questions you have regardless of weather your problem is big or small.

Interested in what your dog is doing during the day?, Soon you will be able to log onto our puppycam s to see what activity your dog is involved in.

We are open Monday through Friday from 7am to 7pm for daycare to fit your busy schedule. Daycare is available when your dog passes its’ “Interview”, and we have a completed Client Information Package including vaccination records:

If your dog is not picked up by 7 :3 0 they may be placed in boarding for the night at the prevailing rate. Please notify us in advance if you are going to be late so that we may try to avoid any misunderstandings and additional charges.

Ask about our discount programs that lower the above costs for advance reservations, multiple dog families, and new clients: You currently receive 10% off your fees for both dogs. We are also currently offering a new client discount package were you get the first three days for half price, and a $10.00 discount on your first pass.

In order to provide you with all the information our clients usually need, and for the health and safety of the pets we care for we are providing this list of g uidelines about what to expect when your dog comes to visit .

Age: Puppies are welcome at Puppy Playland in our puppy program when they reach 12 weeks of age and have completed their DHPP vaccines. They then must receive their Rabies Vaccine at 4 months of age, or when your vet says it’s OK . All dogs must be vaccinated at an age approved by their Vet. for Bortadella and then every six months . All dogs over 8 months of age must be spayed or neutered. Puppies in our program between 3 to 8 months of age interact with the older dogs in order to improve their social skills as they grow. We seek to give your puppy more individual attention to help them learn people skills as well.

Health: All dogs must be in good health. Owners will need to show proof that their dog has not been ill in any 30 day period prior to any time they attend day care. Owners also need to provide proof that their vaccinations and rabies certificate are current. A Bortadella vaccination is required every six months. Dogs that have been ill will need to provide certification from their vet. that the dog is again healthy to be admitted, or re-admitted to day care. Older or out of shape dogs will need a note from your vet. stating they are capable of moderate exercise without risk to their health. We also do not accept dogs that have an open wound or stitches so we can be sure there is no risk of infection. If this happens and you need us to watch your dog arrangements can be made to day board them in our kennels. In addition, owners must sign a medical release agreeing to allow us to act as your agent should anything happen and they need to go to the Vet, and that you will be responsible for any veterinary bills until you can be contacted and assume responsibility for care.

Temperament: All dogs must have completed an evaluation by our staff prior to admittance. Owners should unde rstand that not all dogs are good candidates for day care and that denial of your dog for attendance does not reflect negatively on your dog as a pet. Not all dogs are happy with the activity of a Dog Day Care. Some dogs that are happy in day care as a p uppy may not be suitable at an older age. A completed client information package is also necessary so that we may know their likes and dislikes, and be aware of any health problems or other issues. Our “Entrance Interview” or temperament evaluation gives your dog a chance to get used to playing and interacting with a large group of dogs. Dogs think of our place like an indoor dog park. The Enrtance Interview usually takes about 20 to 30 minutes. We like to try to meet our clients individual schedule for the interview but ask that you schedule ahead so that we know you are coming, and we can be sure it is a time that will be best for your dog based on their personality.

Risks: As with any activity involving exposure of your dog to other dogs, there is an increased chance of injury of your animal or the development of illness. We take every precaution possible to reduce this risk, but cannot eliminate it. Examples of common injuries are sore feet and joints from playing, bruises and scratches. Common illnesses are minor respiratory infections and digestive problems. The overall risks of day care however are less than visiting a dog park. While we supervise the dogs in our care we cannot control every situation. We discipline dogs that do not behave through verbal commands, spraying of water to divert their attention, and time-outs to give them time to rest and refocus their attention. If a dog continues to create problems discipline can ultimately result in the dog being asked to not return to daycare. Owners are however still responsible for the actions of their dog. While this is uncommon t his includes the cost of injuries caused to another dog. Dogs are supervised to reduce these risks.

Reservations: While we will take dogs on a drop in basis, you are strongly advised to confirm a space before arriving with your dog as we base availability on both space and available staff. We have a reservation program in place to help prevent any problems or misunderstandings especially during times when we have a lot of dogs being boarded that are also using our daycare . We seek to maintain an adequate staff to dog ratio. Clients on a monthly program, dogs being boarded, or clients with a reservation will have priority over drop in clients for available spac e. We appreciate your understanding if we limit attendance due to staffing levels.

Food: We recommend that you stick to your dog’s regular feeding schedule. If you wish to have us feed your dog during the day please bring the food in a sealed containe r or zip lock bag with their name attached along with your feeding instructions. Fresh water is available throughout the day. Snacks are not provided during group play in order to avoid arguments, or problems with food allergies . If you would like us to give them one during the day just bring it with you and we will feed them separately.

Toys: We provide toys suitable for the playgroup. Please do not bring toys from home. We would hate to see them damaged so we will not let the dogs share toys from ho me. If your dog is being boarded we will keep their toys in their kennel for them to enjoy while they are in their kennel.

Naptime: There are scheduled quiet times for the dogs in day care. This is to prevent over simulation. The time and duration of th e quiet time is dependent on the activity level of the day and may vary.

Boarding: If your dog is coming to stay for overnight boarding they must pass the entrance interview in order to participate in the play groups during the day. If your dog cannot pas s this temperament test they can still be boarded but will be walked individually at least twice during the day. They must otherwise stay in their kennel away from the other dogs. Their vaccinations must be current as well as their overall health must al so meet the same criteria as needed for daycare. We provide a premium dry dog food for your best friend while they are here that is fed twice a day. Please ask for details if you would like more information. Please let us know if there are any special n eeds. If your dog requires a special diet you will need to provide it along with feeding instructions. If feeding times vary outside our regular feeding times there may be an additional charge. Boarding is also subject to reservations and availability. Visit our Boarding section for detailed information, or ask for our Boarding Flyer, or Boarding Guidelines when you visit us.

Boarding:

We are proud to be members of the ABKA or American Boarding Kennel Association. We subscribe to their Bill of Rights and the standards they set forth for both their Boarding and Daycare programs.

Thank you for your interest in our Overnight Boarding Program. The purpose of our company is to prov ide a fun, stimulating, and safe place for our clients’ dogs while they are at work, while you have construction or other activities going at your home and need fido out of the way, or away on that needed getaway. This relieves people from the worry and a nxiety of leaving their dog at home without supervision while they are away. In the future we plan to offer a shuttle service for your dog to and from our kennel when you are on vacation for those that will desire this service. Please ask for details so we can plan for the need of this service. Another service we offer our clients is the use of our puppycam for checking on your dog while you are away. Simply log onto our website and check out what your dog is up to. We will also plan to provide reports to let you know how your dog adjusted to their stay and how they spent their time.

Below are listed the general guidelines for all dogs that attend our daycare program. In order for your dog to participate in daycare in addition to boarding they will ha ve to meet the requirements of our daycare program, and have attended daycare at least two full days prior to being boarded to ensure that our group play environment will not overstress them.

If your dog does not meet these requirements they can still be boarded, but they will be left in their kennel away from the other dogs. If your dog is scheduled for daycare along with their boarding and daycare does not work out they will be changed to boarding only. Your bill will be adjusted to reflect this change. All dogs must still meet temperament guidelines to be boarded. We do not accept aggressive, or vicious dogs. If your dog is dog aggressive be sure to tell us so that we can work to prevent stress for your dog as well as other dogs by working to prevent any “situations”. These dogs will be walked two times during the day to give them some exercise which is included in the cost of boarding .

At this time we do not offer boarding for cats or other animals but are planning to offer this service in the f uture.

Aggressive and dog aggressive dogs will not be accepted.

Sandy Cortello
Sandy Cortello comes from the island of St. John in the US Virgin Islands were her reputation for training the supposedly untrainable puppy led her to a new career.

Sandy’s love affair with dogs began 14 years ago when rescuing a Mastive/Golden mix puppy from a man who mistreated Augie and had no hint how to raise puppies. Others noticed how Augie was younger and better trained than other puppies. Soon others were asking for advice and having Sandy train their dogs.

Sandy’s love of dogs combined with her natural abilities using natural resources including water, hills, and even coconuts has led to her exercise and teaching techniques. Sandy’s reputation soon spread throughout St. John as she trained, taught others, and helped in developing their rescue program.

Sandy Cortello, our staff trainer is also available to help you through private lessons, training while your dog is in daycare, or while your pet is being boarded. Sandy welcomes your questions on how to solve those problems no matter if they are big or small.

Lynn Petrangelo
Puppy Playland is proud to present Lynn Petrangelo. Lynn can’t remember a time when dogs weren’t a part of her life, and in 1975 she starting showing her first Doberman. She began having others ask her to help show their dogs and then made the natural progression to teaching conformation and handling classes.

Lynn offers a unique and innovative way of starting young or shy dogs through her confidence building class that combines the use of agility

obstacles with basic obedience training, leading to a confident dog that loves learning. This class is an excellent starting point for dogs too young, or too inexperienced for our beginning Agility Class.

All dogs from vaccinated puppies, to shy, and older dogs are welcome. Lynn also offers traditional conformation and handling classes. Lynn’s classes are on Wednesday nights with conformation class at 7:15 held on a drop in basis, and the confidence class in seven week sessions starting at 8:00.

Suzanne Fortner
Puppy Playland is proud to present Suzanne Fortner. Suzanne has been a dog enthusiast for over 20 years and has competed in obedience trials and competition for more than 10 years. She has worked with all breeds while taking courses with Animal Behavior Training Associates, Grooming, and as a Veterinarian Asst.

Suzanne’s philosophy is that a confident dog is well socialized, responsive and mentally balanced. Her training program of obedience commands, consistently taught with positive reinforcement in logical building blocks will produce happy relaxed behaviors. This confident, stimulated dog can then move into the challenges of his environment smoothly and naturally.

Suzanne has trained with some of the top instructors in obedience competition and now brings her knowledge to companion dog training. Her classes will cover all basic obedience commands, and for those interested will work to prepare her students to pass the Canine Good Citizen’s test.

Suzanne also volunteers for Golden Retriever Rescue and Therapy Dog International. Suzanne’s Classes are in seven week sessions and are on Monday nights starting at 7:30.
